Migrating from Entourage 2008 WSE to Outlook 2011 for Mac

Outlook 2011 for Mac has many improvements over Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition. The change in the file structure of Outlook makes is possible to backup only the changed files in the Outlook mail store on your computer. Because of these changes, when you start using Outlook 2011 you only need to create a new email profile (part of the setup procedure) and cache all your mail. Outlook will take care of building the proper bits and bytes behind the scene.

This tutorial will focus on the conversion/migration of your Entourage 2008 WSE local mail store, which is found under the heading "On My Computer" below your inbox. This is the equivalent of an Outlook for Windows PST. This is your archive.

Migrating from Entourage 2008 WSE to Outlook 2011 for MAC - Quicktime Required

A few terms that I use in this video:

Production Mail(box) = this is the mail that is kept on the server. this mail can be seen by your email program, smart phone, or webmail interface.

Local Mail Store = This is the mail that is not on the server. This is mail that you have archived to the location called "On My Computer". The only copy of this mail exists on your computer and what ever location you back your computer up to.

EML = Entourage EmaiL format.

1) Locate the INBOX, that is listed below the "On My Computer" section of Entourage, and drag it to the desktop. This will create the MBOX copy of your archive.

Note: This will take some time depending on how large your email archive is.

Note: If the MBOX file that was created is empty, of zero bytes, create a subfolder inside the archive INBOX, move the mail into the subfolder, and repeat the drag and drop process to create the MBOX.

2) Open Outlook 2011 for Mac.

3) From the File menu, select Import.

4) Choose "Contacts or Messages from a text file". Click next.

5) Choose "Import messages from an MBOX-format text file"

6) Locate your MBOX file to import.

7) Click "Finish" after the import completes.

Note: This may take some time to complete, depending on the size of your MBOX file.

You will now see your archive appear in Outlook 2011 for Mac under the section titled "On My Computer." If you do not, continue with step 8.

8) From the "File" menu, select "Preferences", then select "General".

9) Deselect the checkbox next to the setting named "Hide On My Computer folders"

Your migrated archive will now appear.
