During the summer of 2011, we will begin moving accounts from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010. There are a number of issues that will come up as we make changes, and this page is where we will document our answers to both frequently asked questions (FAQ's) and the reults of our testing. If you have a migration related question that is not found on this site, you may contact us by email at messaging@ad.unt.edu. If you have a support related question, please contact the UNT Helpdesk at helpdesk@unt.edu or (940)565-2324.
Premigration Tasks: Do this before you are migrated!!
- If you have a smart phone (iPhone, iOS device, Android, Windows mobile, etc), Make and confirm that you have a backup of your device. This is always a good precaution. For example, back up your phone to iTunes before migration if you have an iOS device.
- Make sure you are logged out of your email client, prior to migration.
- Empty your trash.
- If you are in the habit of storing large files as draft messages in Outlook, you will want to delete these items prior to migration. Share point is a good resource to use for storing documents.
What to expect:
- HTC Phones are notoriously problematic. View the helpdesk page on HTC for information. There is not much support we can give you on these phones, they just dont like to connect. Check our troubleshooting tips for the HTC.
- Blackberry users will not need to reactivate their devices.
- Apple Mail, users will need to manually change their server settings from legacy to webmail.
- iOS users, may need to manually change their settings from legacy to webmail. Some devices have been known to make the change automatically, though it is not guaranteed to do so.
- Rules in Apple Mail that redirect mail into another folder will need to be revisited. The rule doesn't need to be rewritten, it just needs to be edited and told to redirect to the folder again.
- Android users will need to manually change their settings from legacy to webmail.
- Windows 7 users with Outlook 2010, the first time you log in there will be a minimal delay while Windows makes adjustments to your mail profile.
- If you have calendar conflicts in your calendar, your migration will fail. Remove the calendar conflicts prior to your scheduled migration.
- For HTC Android users the following link would direct you the information related UNT Exchange e-mail: HTC Android users
- If you are using a third party IMAP web application to read and parse mail, you need to install the Digicert Root CA on your webserver. It can be found here: https://www.digicert.com/digicert-root-certificates.htm
Frequently Asked Questions:
Windows
- Do I have to use Outlook 2010 to access my mail on the new system? The short answer is no. The long answer is that there are a number of features that are available to you in the new Outlook 2010 client that you may want or need to use.
- Will shared calendars still work? If you belong to a shared calendar in Exchange 2007, when you move to Exchange 2010 the calendar will continue to function.
Mac
- Can I use Apple Mail? Yes. In our testing the latest version of Apple Mail works just fine.
Linux
- Firefox nor Chrome show the advanced features in the web client that you would see using Firefox or Chrome on the Mac or PC.
Network Managers
- Prior to migrating, we will need to have the name of your management security group, so that we can apply new Exchange 2010 management permissions for your OU.
- To manage users in your OU, you can now use the Exchange Control Panel (ECP) at https://webmail.unt.edu/ECP for access. You'll need to log in with your administrative credentials - more information is located here: http://emds.unt.edu/exchange-control-panel-ecp-exchange-2010
- You will need to account for UserMailboxes, Room Mailboxes, and Equipment Mailboxes in your lists to migrate. Mail enabled distribution lists do not require moving.
- There is a well known issue that after migration, some users ActiveSync devices will no longer sync mail even with the correct settings. This is because inheritable permissions are turned off on the users object. This article explains how to fix this problem for your affected user. http://blogs.msexchange.org/walther/2009/09/13/issues-activesync-after-moving-user-mailboxes-to-exchange-2010/
